Partiarshiye ponds (7/1, Bolshoy Patriarshiy Lane) are certainly a legendary place in Moscow. Its history goes back to the 16th century, when the residence of Patriarch Ioakim was settled here. The Ponds used to be the favourite walking place for Muscovites belonging to many generations. Leo Tolstoy, an author of world-famous War and Peace and Anna Karenina novels brought his daughters here for skating. Marina Tsvetaeva, an outstanding Russian 20th century poetess, was born in this area, Alexander Blok, St. Pete’s poet, spent his only Moscow winter here. Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita Novel starts near the Ponds – the head of Berlioz was cut off by the tram right here. You will surely enjoy evening walks around the Ponds. The orderly line of street lamps starts shining when the darkness descends. In winter the Ponds turn into a skating rink (you can rent skates right here). If you’re not in a hurry, stay over here for dinner. The famous luxurious restaurant The Pavilion, so popular among the Moscow elite, is located right near the water. It is made and decorated in Soviet chic style – with hostesses dressed in long pleated skirts of the 1950s, delicious dishes from the menu of an expensive “pansionat” (Moscow elite used to spend holidays in pansionats – holiday hotels in Moscow area). You will enjoy live music as well. The average bill is 1500-2500 rubles ($50 - 80). When the dinner is finished walk down the old narrow streets that surround the Ponds. While you are still close to the Ponds look at the house №9. This monumental building decorated with huge columns and the statues of lions was built in 1945 as a residence of high-ranking Soviet officers. Renting a flat near of the Ponds costs $2000 a month, while the purchasing price is not less than 200 thousand dollars.
